10 years agoRemember that elephant that was put down after attacking a vehicle in South Africa's Kruger Park? Well amateur footage has surfaced of the incident ... and it's pretty frightening.
Tourists Sarah Brooks and Jans de Klerk, had to be admitted to hospital after an elephant overturned their vehicle several times before pushing their car off the road near Skukuza restcamp in the southern area of the Kruger National Park. Brooks was injured when one of the elephant’s tusks ripped through the back of her upper thigh, while De Klerk suffered no major injuries.
Kruger National Park management, SANParks, came under heavy scrutiny after a decision was made to shoot and kill the elephant bull responsible for the attack. Many people took to social media to voice their outrage at what they believed to be an unnecessary overreaction from the conservation body.
Kruger National Park spokesperson William Mabasa defended the decision: “Our rangers reported that the same elephant bull had been involved in previous fights with other dominant bulls since it has been in musth phase.”
Although the video raises questions regarding the behaviour of the tourists, with many viewers suggesting that the driver should have given the elephant more space and heeded the obvious warning signs, Mabasa believes that the bull was “unusually aggressive” and that euthanasia was the best option.
