10 years agoRemember the crazy purple feather duster that was spotted meandering the deep sea by the research vessel Nautilus? Well today, the Nautilus crew strikes again ... and all we can say is: Wow. It might not look like much, but when the lights go off on the ship's remotely operated vehicle (wait for it ... seriously) this shapeless ball of pearlescent goo gives a breathtaking display of bioluminescence.
It looks like a jelly, but actually both this sea creature and its purple predecessor are siphonophores, colonial groupings of tiny animals in the class Hydrozoa. Slow clap, Nautilus ... slow clap.
