Dumbo octopus displays a peculiar posture
Invertebrate zoologist Mike Vecchione was stumped when a 'Dumbo' octopus spotted in the Gulf of Mexico displayed some never before seen behavior.
8 years agoSquid specialists from the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and Auckland University of Technology worked tirelessly Monday to dissect a rare colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni). Specimens in such good condition are rarely available to scientists, so the latest example (a female with a brood of eggs) caused a lot of excitement!
The entire procedure was broadcast live on YouTube (don't worry if you missed it, the video is still available for your squid-viewing pleasure). For more information on colossal squid, check out the dissection Twitter feed using hashtags #squidwatch and #sciencelivetepapa.
