This week in sharks showing off their hunting skills: an incredible video filmed off Cape Cod yesterday shows a great white shark hurling itself out of the water as it relentlessly pursues a seal.
Dr Greg Skomal of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries was working with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy when he captured the footage. Despite those athletic efforts, it seems the shark failed to catch the seal.
It was a busy day for shark researchers in the area – in addition to the breaching incident, the team managed to tag two 12-foot (3.6m) great white sharks as part of ongoing efforts to learn more about these apex predators. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy aims to conserve great whites through scientific research, improved public safety and education.
And just in case the video didn’t quite quench your shark thirst, check out these aerial images of a successful shark predation captured by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy over the weekend:
Our spotter pilot Wayne Davis witnessed a predation (white shark eating a grey seal) off Monomoy yesterday.
