Shot by Alpaca Media in Utrecht, Netherlands earlier this month, this 'zen-mode' inducing video highlights just how incredible bird flight is. And just like cloud watching, it's impossible to resist picking out familiar shapes in this twisting mass of starlings. Is that a whale? A UFO? The pulsating swarm (called a mumuration) uses a few simple rules to create the illusion of being one giant organism. Rule No. 1: If the bird next to you moves, you move! Scientists are still working out the finer details of this bird ballet, but one thing is obvious: it's incredibly beautiful. Can't get enough? Check out this amazing mumuration video from last year!
