When it comes to finned creatures in the awesome category, the archerfish ranks pretty much at the top of the pile. Armed with water bullets and a sniper-like accuracy, these expert assassins can shoot grasshoppers, spiders and other insects off low-hanging branches with amazing speed and pinpoint precision.
Typically found in brackish estuaries and mangroves from India to Polynesia, the archerfish uses a narrow groove in the roof of its mouth to squirt a powerful jet of water at its unsuspecting prey, sending it tumbling into the water below where it is hastily gobbled up.
The accuracy is made all that more impressive if you consider that the archerfish has to account for the refraction of light below the water surface. But don't take our word for it, watch the archerfish in action in the short clip below.
