A critically endangered baby pangolin at Taiwan's Taipei Zoo is reminding the world this week that breastfeeding is hard work! The baby was born in early September weighing in at a mere 133 grams (4.6 oz)! This is a normal birth weight for pangolins, but after several days the little one hadn't gained any weight. Zoo staff began to suspect the baby was having trouble nursing when they noticed it spending an unusual amount of time in the feeding posture. Close monitoring revealed the scaly anteater couldn't latch on to its mother's nipples.

To ensure it would get enough milk, the team decided to move the baby onto an artificial feeding plan. This is the first time staff have attempted the full-time job of nursing a pangolin (feedings are needed every hour around the clock!) but the plan seems to be working. In just a few short weeks, the baby has nearly tripled in size and is becoming more and more active – though it has a long way to go before it masters that distinctive pangolin 'T. rex walk.'
