The time has come, the walrus said, to talk of many things: of shoes, and ships, and ceiling wax, of cabbages and ... letting sharks have their own emoji!
After years of criticism from scientists, Discovery made big improvements to this year's Shark Week line-up. Now, in the wake of the network's biggest soiree, they've done something else we love: they've launched a petition to help sharks become the next big animal emoji.
Yes, for those days when dolphins, whales and Spanish dancers just don't cut it – those days when you just want to express yourself in shark – there is hope.
"The Unicode Consortium is a non-profit that regulates the coding standards for modern software and computers, including the alphabet and emojis you use on your iPhone and Android," they explain on the petition page. "Recently, the wonderful folks at Unicode announced they have accepted 38 new emoji characters as candidates for Unicode 9.0 (to be released in mid-2016). And, drum roll please ... a shark emoji is one of the nominees!"
You can view the full list of could-be emojis on the Unicode website. Cast your vote for team shark here.
(Protip: Dolphins and whales aren't fish. They're mammals.)
