For budding biological artist Tristan Klein, there is nothing more exciting than learning new things through his art. Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's work, the 18-year-old illustrator began working on anatomical drawings just seven months ago, near the end of high school (may we repeat: high school!).
"I wanted to try something different ... so I decided to find a tan-toned sketchbook and some pens," he says. "From there I started studying anatomy and realised how interesting it was. After a few pages, I was determined to finish a whole sketchbook with just these illustrations. Now I get to gain knowledge by doing what I love. I learn facts, history, muscle and bone labels ... and so much more."
Amazingly, all of Klein's drawings are penned in ink, so a single mistake means starting over from scratch. "I use this medium because I want to challenge myself," he explains. "I've taught myself self-control, patience and self-confidence this way."
With no training in biology, Klein turns to 'the greats' of his field (artists like Stephan Peck, H.Dittrich and Jimmy Catanzaro) for inspiration and guidance. "I reference many of the greats (among other sources), but I do change up many of the photos and drawings. I would love to illustrate for something like an anatomy book one day. However, I'm still young and have much to learn and improve on. Hopefully one day I'll have the opportunity to!"
Klein might be young, but sweet mother of Darwin is he talented! He'll soon be setting up an Etsy store, where prints of his work will be available to purchase. Until then, you can check out more of his art on Instagram!
