Feast your eyes on the cuteness that is Chicago's Shedd Aquarium's newest resident: an orphaned sea otter!
After being discovered by beach-goers off the California coast, the emaciated pup (thought to be just five weeks old!) was taken to the Monterey Bay Aquarium for rehabilitation. Bottles of rich formula and a lot of TLC later, she was sent to the Shedd for continued care.
With over 25 years of experience caring for fragile sea otter pups, the Shedd Aquarium quickly accepted Monterey Bay’s call to provide the orphan with a more permanent home. Six to eight otter-care experts will continue to monitor the pup around the clock, teaching her the grooming, feeding and temperature-regulating behaviours necessary to survive at sea.
